NOBLESVILLE, IN — Riverview Health is proud to recognize Hernia Awareness Month by raising awareness about the signs, symptoms, and treatment options for hernias, while encouraging individuals to seek medical evaluation for persistent abdominal discomfort.

Hernias are a common medical condition that occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in muscle or surrounding tissue. They can develop in different areas of the body, most commonly in the abdomen or groin.  While some hernias may initially cause mild symptoms, they can worsen over time and may require surgical intervention when left untreated.  Depending on the type of hernia, symptoms that may indicate the need for medical evaluation include:

  • A noticeable bulge or swelling in the abdomen or groin

  • Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting, bending or coughing

  • A feeling of heaviness or pressure in the abdomen

  • Persistent heartburn or reflux symptoms

  • Difficulty swallowing or the sensation of food getting stuck

“Awareness is key when it comes to hernia care,” said Dr. Carly Thoma-Perry, board-certified general surgeon at Riverview Health. “Many people downplay or do not recognize symptoms, but timely evaluation and treatment can help prevent complications and improve quality of life."

With emerging technologies such as the DaVinci 5 surgical robots, Riverview Health offers a comprehensive solution for hernia patients. Dr. John Martin, board-certified general surgeon at Riverview Health, shared, “Today, our team is able to perform advanced hernia repair procedures locally using robotic-assisted technology, allowing for greater precision while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissue.

By combining advanced technology, highly skilled professionals, and a collaborative approach to patient care, Riverview Health is setting a new standard for hernia repair surgery in the community.
