Maternity Visitor Guidelines >>

With the comfort and safety of you and your baby in mind, Riverview Health provides a family-centered environment to ensure your entire birthing experience is a positive one. Our maternity staff and obstetricians also try to adhere as much as possible to your labor and birthing preferences while ensuring the health of your baby. We have about 600 deliveries each year, including singleton and delivery of twins/multiples. We practice evidence-based care, which means we practice delayed cord-clamping, delayed bathing and immediate skin-to-skin care, which is called "The Golden Hour."

Level II Special Care Nursery

Our expertly trained and experienced nurses, combined with our partnership with Peyton Manning Ascension St. Vincent pediatric newborn hospitalists means you can rest assured your new baby will be well cared for. Pediatric newborn hospitalists are doctors who have received extensive neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) training and can care for newborns who are experiencing a range of issues such as respiratory distress, jaundice and infections. They also work closely with nurses and respiratory therapists and will coordinate care for your newborn, should they need to be transferred to more specialized care. All of our nurses are specially trained in newborn resuscitation  and stabilization so we can be prepared for any event. We can care for up to six babies at a time in this space.

Our skilled Level II Special Care Nursery staff care for:

  • Babies who need oxygen, IV fluids, continuous observation or CPAP
  • Babies who are born at or after 34 weeks gestation. These babies may have some health problems, but they’re not so serious that they need a more specialized care.
  • Babies who are born before 34 weeks or who weigh less than 1,500 grams, until they can be moved to a nursery that provides more specialized care.
  • Babies who have just gotten out of a NICU and are growing and doing well but are not ready to go home.
  • Babies who need equipment to help them breathe.
