|Kyphoplasty Procedure Strengthens Spine and Eliminates Pain|
August 29th 2013 - |
According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, in a three-month period, about one-fourth of US adults experience at least one day of back pain. It is one of the most common medical problems that doctors are asked about, and can become a chronic issue if it is not properly treated.
A common disease known to cause chronic back pain is osteopenia/osteoporosis, which affects nearly nine million Americans. Because this disease causes bones to become fragile and easily break, spinal fractures that lead to chronic back pain are very common.
A minimally invasive procedure called balloon kyphoplasty, which is offered at Riverview Interventional Pain Center, can help people with osteopenia/osteoporosis who have a spinal fracture. This procedure actually repairs the fractured vertebra and improves the spinal deformity. In this special procedure, doctors return the fractured vertebra to the correct position and insert a cement-like substance to help stabilize the bone.
