Prevent Skin Cancers - Lather Up!
Author: Dr. Jessica Sheely
July 7th 2011 -

As we head out to enjoy the great outdoors this summer, be sure to protect your skin!  Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with more than two million people being diagnosed each year. However, it is also one of the most preventable cancers.

Remember these tips the next time you head out:

  • Be proactive and prevent skin cancer by avoiding sunburns.  This means staying out of the sun between 10 and 4.
  • Cover up with clothing or a wide brimmed hat.
  • Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher 30 minutes before going outside  and reapply every two hours.
  • Examine your skin from head to toe each month and report any changes to your physician.  Visit your doctor or dermatologist for a professional skin exam once a year.
